Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction (ACL/R)

Ensuring stability in your knee for sport

The ACL is an important ligament in the knee which ensures stability in the knee when when participating in sport that requires a change in direction. After an ACL surgery, it is of utmost importance to undergo strict and progressive rehabiliation so that you will be able to gain the most out of the surgery.

There are different phases of rehabiliation after an ACL surgery of which you are required to meet a certain criteria before you move on.

Ankle Ligament Repair

Restoring ankle stability (especially for chronic ankle instability)

There are many ligaments in the ankle which gives rise to the stability, control and proprioception (big work for control and balance) of the ankle.

When would you repair the ligaments in the ankle?

The first line of treatment after an ankle sprain is to seek help from a Physiotherapist to treat your ankle sprain. However, In the event that these ligaments are torn and that there are consntan episodes of ankle sprains (commonly known as chronic ankle instability), you might consider going for an ankle ligament repair where the orthopaedic surgeon reconstructs the ligament to restore ankle stability.

This is merely the beginning. After the ankle ligament repair, you will soon realise that your ankle is stiff and there is a good amount of swelling and pain. During your rehabilitation, expect to work with your Physiotherapist to:

  • Reduce pain and swelling.
  • Restore ankle mobility and strength (think: you need your ankle to move before you can squat or get down the stairs).
  • Restore leg and ankle strength.
  • Restore balance.
  • Gradually return to your day to day activities and sport.

Frozen Shoulder

Management of frozen shoulders

Frozen shoulders in Singapore are not uncommon! You probably would you hear your 50-plus year old auntie reporting that her shoulder is stuck, she has difficulty washing her hair, or she has pain dong her bra!

One of the conditions that ladies in this age group might face is a frozen shoulder contracture syndrome. No, the shoulder is not literally frozen, but rather, it describes a state of global movement restriction, meaning, that alot of the shoulder movements are limited and painful.

Frozen shoulder don’t affect only woman. It may sometimes affect men in their 50s and individuals with diabetes may only be at risk of developing this condition.

Though painful and often a frustrating condition to deal with, frozen shoulder contracture syndromes are self-limiting. In Singlish, they get better on their own la!

Tennis elbow

Pain over the outside of your elbow?

No! Tennis elbow is not limited to the person who plays tennis! We cannot remember the last person who came in saying that they play tennis and have outside elbow pain!

Tennis elbow, or more fancifully named, lateral epicondylgia, happens because of repeated gripping or twisting movements. One would come in after an episode of spring cleaning at home or increased household chores because the domestic helper has left the household!

You might experience some weakness and pain when opening a door, when wringing a towel or in more acute cases, pain over your elbow when pulling a blanket!

Through Physiotherapy, we at The Rehab Centre provide evidence-informed techniques that not only address the immediate discomfort but also ensure long-term pain-relief!  We aim to not only reduce your pain but to help you understand what has brough you to us so that you may care for yourself in the future!

Acute Low Back Pain

Pain in the back. Literally.

Low back pains are so common in Singapore that if you ask around, it is likely someone has experienced a recent episode of low back pain. Is low back pain serious? Research has demosnrated that 90% of low back pains are non-specific and they don’t have a pathoanatomical diagnosis (again, fanciful way of saying, it’s not a fracture or cancer la!).

Physiotherapists at The Rehab Centre are trained to identify any low back pains that require further medical attention or treatment. More often than not, low back pains require a message of assurance, confidence and unguarded movements.

Do not be surprised if we encourage you to move within the limits of your comfort or if we suggest gradually increasing your physical activity.
